Stepping into the editor
role for this issue has been both energising and grounding – energising because of
the breadth of voices and experiences represented here, and grounding because it
reminded me just how diverse, thoughtful, and generous our community really is.
This edition has a strong thread running through it: perspective. Where we’ve come
from, where we’re heading, and how we navigate the many versions of a career in
gynaecology along the way.

We open with our President’s Message, setting the tone for the society and the
month ahead, followed by a Member Spotlight interview that I particularly enjoyed. It
highlights the varied and often non-linear career paths within AGES – a timely
reminder that there is no single “right” way to build a fulfilling professional life, and
that our differences are a real strength.

Our Journal Club contributions continue to showcase rigorous thinking and healthy
debate. Whether you’re someone who reads every paper cover to cover or someone
who appreciates a well-digested summary between clinics, these pieces aim to keep
us connected to evidence while staying grounded in real-world practice.
Several articles in this edition focus on the structures that support us – often quietly – behind the scenes. The AGES Board Governance Day piece asks an important
question: why does governance matter? The answer, unsurprisingly, is that good
governance underpins everything from leadership and advocacy to education and
the sustainability of our society itself.

Similarly, reflections on the AAGL in Vancouver capture not just what we learned,
but the value of coming together, reconnecting, and being challenged by new ideas
(and new time zones). We highlight AGES’ presence on the international stage, with
coverage of the AAGL Barbara Levy Award of our very own Dr Amani Harris and the
society’s involvement more broadly. It’s encouraging to see AGES represented in
global conversations and to recognise the individuals who help elevate our profile
internationally.

For those contemplating time abroad, the pieces on international fellowships,
observerships, and travelling scholarships offer honest, first-hand insights. Is it worth
it? What do you gain -professionally and personally? And how do those
experiences shape practice once you’re back home? These articles don’t shy away
from the complexities, which makes them all the more valuable.

Finally, we turn our focus to early career gynaecologists. The reflections on “what we
wish we’d known” and the top ten pieces of advice are generous, practical, and
reassuring. Even for those who are further along, they prompt reflection – and
perhaps a little recognition of a younger self.

A final shout out to our sponsors, Avant who dive into a practical guide to informed
financial consent, giving clinicians a timely reminder that good care includes being
upfront about the financial journey as well as the clinical one.

I hope this edition feels both informative and companionable -something you can
dip into, reflect on, and maybe even see yourself in. Thank you to all our contributors
for their time, honesty, and commitment to sharing their experiences.

To our wonderful committee Dr Kirsten Connan, Dr Jenni Pontre, Dr Kate Martin, Dr
Keryn Harlow, Dr Akshara Shyamsunder, Dr Alison Bryant-Smith, Dr Basia Lowes,
and Dr Rebecca Nash, who make this publication possible. And as always, I
encourage you to get involved in AGES and keep the conversation going.

Warm regards,
Nyasha Gwata
Editor
FRANZCOG MIPH MBBS (Hons) BMedSci
AGES Board Member, Advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopic Surgeon
Monash Health, Melbourne

This edition of eSCOPE explores perspective across the many paths of a career in gynaecology – from leadership and governance to international engagement and early-career reflections.
