Grant
recipients will receive a 50% subsidy on the cost of six coaching sessions, reducing
the total cost to $1200 AUD/NZD for members.

When did it start?

AGES partnered with the Academy for Surgical Coaching, a US-based nonprofit, to
launch the AGES Surgical Coaching Program in March 2026, bringing structured,
evidence-based coaching to gynaecological surgeons across Australia and New
Zealand.

The inaugural cohort of AGES Surgical Coaches completed certification through the
Academy’s Surgical Coach Training Program, a curriculum grounded in more than a
decade of peer-reviewed research into surgical performance. These coaches now
support AGES colleagues through confidential, one-on-one coaching relationships
that can focus on technical skill, clinical decision-making, and/or professional
wellbeing.

How is coaching different to mentoring or teaching?

The coaching model draws on peer coaching rather than traditional mentorship:
coach and coachee can be of similar seniority, and the relationship is built around
the surgeon’s own goals rather than top-down correction. Sessions follow a
structured cycle – goal setting, observation (including optional video review), debrief,
and action planning – techniques research shows are far more consistently applied
by surgeons who’ve completed formal coach training.

What is the benefit of surgical coaching?

The surgical coaching published evidence links surgical coaching to improved
technical performance, communication, procedural confidence, and surgeon
wellbeing, though reviewers note that larger trials are still needed to confirm effects
on measurable patient outcomes and patient safety. The Academy presents
coaching as evidence-informed rather than a proven cure-all – a distinction the AGES
program shares.

Can I choose my coach?

The coach and surgical coachee are paired through a formalised process, facilitated
by the ASC. This process carefully considers your preferences, and availability of
both the coach and coachee. A 30-minute introduction session is recommended to
experience surgical coaching before committing to the full program.

How can I access surgical coaching?

AGES members at any career stage can request a coach, or train to become a
surgical coach by contacting Program Director Pearl Anderson
at pearl@surgicalcoaching.org.

Further information on the program is available on the AGES
(here, via the AGES website.

Dr Kirsten Connan, is both an AGES surgical coach and has a surgical coach (Dr
Kristine Lombardozzi – US based trauma
